MYC: The Inside Scoop
This week, as well as welcoming back everyone to a gorgeous Spring semester, we can welcome back a group of 120 ECU & FOCUS-IBM students who have spent their last week of holidays at Merroo studying God’s word on the topic of Ministry at the annual Mid Year Conference. If you were outside the country (the only valid excuse for missing such an event) Nick, Belinda & Tim will fill you in on what you missed…
Nick Peffer is in his 2nd year of a Bachelor of Environmental Science.
How many times have you been to MYC before? This is my first time.
What has been the best thing about MYC for you? Getting God’s mission & purpose into perspective. Also PJ’s talks are REALLY good!
What has struck you most from Phillip Jensen’s talks? Looking at the difference between the Jewish & non-Jewish communities, and the historical context behind Paul’s letters.
Have you had any light bulb moments (when everything just clicks)? Yes! In PJ’s talks when he spoke about God’s purpose and how He wants everyone to live under Christ… and how everything in our lives should follow on from this!
What is something new you’ve learned from Romans in your small group? Faith – we should want it to grow and grow so that we don’t get led astray.
What would you say to someone who decided not to come this year? Shame, Shame, Shame!
And finally, have you Met Your Companion this MYC? No, still looking!
Belinda Dawe is in her 2nd year of a Commerce degree.
How many times have you been to MYC before? This is the first.
What has been the best thing about MYC for you? Definitely the talks! They were challenging, they covered so much text and covered it so thoroughly!
What has struck you most from Phillip Jensen’s talks? The challenge to give up my career for ministry. That’s daunting because I’m studying such a career-oriented degree!
Have you had any light bulb moments? Yes on Wednesday night the marriage relationship became really clear to me, when Phillip explained that a husband needs to be like the pastor and the wife his congregation.
What is something new you’ve learned from Romans in your small group? God wants us to give Him our all and also to live in subjection to Him.
Did you have any fears coming to MYC for the first time? Yes, especially as a mature age student, I was quite concerned that I’d be a bit displaced.
What would you say to someone who decided not to come this year? They missed out on a very encouraging and more importantly educational experience!
And finally, have you Met Your Companion this MYC? As of 7.50am on Friday the 15th NO! But there’s plenty of time left!
Tim Speed has just graduated from a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor of Law.
How many times have you been to MYC before? Just once before.
What has been the best thing about MYC for you? I was challenged by the talks. Now that I’ve finished Uni it made me consider what I should do for the rest of my life concerning ministry.
What has struck you most from Phillip Jensen’s talks? The importance of making ministry a priority even if you’re a ‘tentmaker’ (someone in the workforce, not in full-time paid ministry).
Have you had any light bulb moments? Not really, my learning was more gradual. But I have recently lead some Bible studies on some of the topics covered this week, so I found it really helpful to recap on all of this information.
What is something new you’ve learned from Romans in your small group? I need to be more conscious of how to love and serve my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. As part of this I need to see that the standards I’m comfortable with might not be the same as what other people are comfortable with, and I need to learn to respond appropriately.
What would you say to someone who decided not to come this year? You missed out… but it will be on again next year! You won’t ever find a place where you can have so much fun while learning so much from the Bible.
And finally, have you Met Your Companion this MYC? Um no. And I’ll just leave it at that…
Well although it seems that MYC was quite unsuccessful as a companion-meeting ground, it appears that everyone was greatly encouraged by the fellowship that was experienced as the body of Christ. And after all… there’s always next year! Why not go and find someone who went to MYC this year and find out what it’s all about.
